Attracting your ideal audience

The first thing I ask someone who’s interested in growing their social media presence is WHO their ICA (Ideal Customer Avatar) is. And often they’ll say oh I don’t have any customers or clients, I’m not selling anything. And then I explain that you have an ICA whether you’re a product based, service based, or brand based business. You just haven’t defined them yet.

If you have a blog you’re trying to grow, or an Instagram or FB account, you either have a personal brand, or a business brand, or you’re creating one, or you don’t realize that’s what you’re doing, but yup girl, you are a brand, and you are ‘selling’ yourself, your style, your advice, your aesthetic, your lifestyle, your content. And you’re ‘selling’ it to someone beyond F&F.

If the word selling puts you off, then think of it as sharing, you’re sharing, you’re inspiring, you’re helping, you’re serving, you’re connecting WITH SOMEONE.

Who is your Ideal Customer Avatar?

Your ICA is marketing lingo for your target audience. And you need to define WHO exactly that is, in order to grow your Instagram or blog strategically. The number of followers you have should not just be a vanity metric of random followers. That’s why buying followers is a no no. It doesn’t work. You can have bots following you, but they won’t engage in your content, because they’re not following you because they’re interested in what you’re creating, or they connect with you. They’re not humans, and they’re not active accounts. But you need active engagement for genuine growth and success on the gram. To understand what you’re engagement rate is, click here.

If you want to grow a real following with raving fans and supportive customers and friends, you have to DEFINE THEM TO FIND THEM!

Define them to find them!

So think of WHAT you offer, and WHO it would be interesting or helpful for. The more specific you can get, and the more you can niche down, the more this is going to help you grow. The crazy growth is in niches. You can’t be something for everyone, and you don’t want to be!

If you’re creating content about sleep training babies and toddlers for example, then it’s pretty easy to figure out who your ICA is: parents with babies and toddlers who are desperate for sleep and looking for sleep training advice. But you’re going to want to go deeper than that, is it moms specifically you’re targeting? Where? Are they working moms?

Here are some questions you should ask yourself:

Who am I serving?

What am I offering them?

What do they do?

How old are they?

Where do they live?

What do they love?

What are their favorite brands?

These are some starter questions to help you start defining who it is you’re trying to attract, so that you can use that information and implement a killer growth strategy!
